MINISTRY
OF ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS WEBSITE LAUCHED
YELLOWKNIFE
(June 21, 2001) - The Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs marked National
Aboriginal Day by launching its new website www.maa.gov.nt.ca
during a live radio broadcast from William McDonald School in Yellowknife
this morning.
Sixty grade-six
students from four different schools in the Northwest
Territories joined in a website scavenger hunt to mark the official
launch. Students from Louie Norwegian School in Jean Marie River,
Sir
Alexander Mackenzie School in Inuvik, JB Tyrrell School in Fort
Smith
and William McDonald School in Yellowknife used their surfing skills
to
locate answers to three trivia questions.
The new website
allows users to understand the work done by the Ministry and the
status of ongoing negotiations by viewing agreements
entered into with Aboriginal groups in the NWT.
"The negotiation
and implementation of agreements
will change the face of governance in the NWT," Mr. Antoine
said. "We have put together the website for the Ministry as
one means of ensuring residents have access to this important information."
There are over
300 links contained within the new website, which is organized to
allow for easy navigation, and includes archival
photographs of NWT people and places.
Coffee mugs,
posters and computer mouse pads have been produced to promote the
new website. visitors to the site are encouraged to sign
the online guestbook.
