GNWT and UNW begin collective bargaining

Yellowknife (January 14, 2016) – Chairman of the Financial Management Board Robert C. McLeod announced that the Government of the Northwest Territories began negotiation of a new collective agreement with the Union of Northern Workers (UNW) today.

“The Northwest Territories is facing a range of economic challenges which continue to affect the GNWT,” said Minister McLeod. “We need to find a balance between investing in our public service and being financially responsible. The government’s goal is to ensure fair compensation for employees and, at the same time, to deliver on our overall fiscal responsibility and our commitment to the priorities of the government and NWT residents”.

The GNWT is committed to meaningful collective bargaining to achieve sustainable public services for Northerners.

The GNWT and UNW meet January 14-15, 2016, with negotiations continuing January 25-29, 2016. Information about the bargaining process, GNWT and UNWT proposals and updates will be posted online at http://www.hr.gov.nt.ca/bargaining.
