Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Accepts Recommendations from OAG Performance Audit

YELLOWKNIFE (October 25, 2016) – The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs has accepted the recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) Performance Audit of the Department.

The OAG undertook a performance audit of the Department’s operations to assess MACA’s performance as it relates to supporting community governments with the provision of essential services to residents.

As a first step, the Minister has instructed the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs to take immediate action in a number of areas identified by the audit.

Quick Facts:

  • 13 recommendations were made by the Auditor General in various areas, including: fire protection services; emergency preparedness; drinking water; waste management; capacity development; the Accountability Framework; and the department’s relationship with designated authorities.
  • The Department will work in consultation with the NWT Association of Communities, the Local Governments Administrators of the NWT, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada and other stakeholders as required to develop an Action Plan in response to the recommendations.  This Action Plan will be presented to the Standing Committee on Government Operations within 120 days of the Tabling of the OAG report.
