Statement by Premier McLeod on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

Today we remember a targeted attack on women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. This was a horrific act of violence, and we must all work together to ensure that this never happens again. We are all responsible for making our homes and communities safer by protecting victims and their children, holding violent people accountable for their actions, and providing opportunities for change.

Together, we must work toward a goal of a territory with safe communities and safe homes, where all of our residents can reach their potential. Violence against women puts all of us in danger. As a key member of the Coalition Against Family Violence, the GNWT provides support services and public education to end the violence. We must always remember that violence is deliberate. Supporting and protecting victims includes helping violent people make the life changes they need to have healthy relationships with their partners and families.

The women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal were killed because they were women who were preparing to enter fields that were considered non-traditional. We remember them for their vision as we encourage girls and women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, aviation, and the corporate boardrooms of Canada and the world.
