GNWT Mail Operations During Postal Strike

Media Advisory

June 3, 2011 - NWT residents are advised that The GNWT is taking the following actions to ensure that necessary packages are still available throughout the current mail strike.  For the duration of the postal strike, GNWT cheques and other packages will not be delivered through the mail.

In Yellowknife, Fort Smith, Fort Simpson, and Inuvik, GNWT offices will be holding important packages like driver’s licences, general identification cards (GIC), and pay cheques for the recipients to pick up. Licences and GIC cards are available at the local issuing offices and pay cheques can be picked up at the local Finance offices.

Individuals will have to present government issued identification for personal packages. For vendors, a letter printed on official letter head will have to be presented stating the name of the individual authorized to receive the payment along with that individual’s government identification.

Anyone who is expecting a package or letter from a GNWT office should contact the office.  Staff will continue to contact clients by phone and e-mail as required.

In communities without issuing offices, the GNWT has developed contingency plans to help residents of remote communities receive their pay cheques, income assistance, child care user subsidy, and student financial assistance. These can be picked up at either the local ECE office or Band office if there isn’t a CSO.

All clients set up with direct deposit will receive all of their scheduled payments and will not be affected by the postal strike.
