Work/Life Balance

In the NWT it isn’t all work and no play. In most communities your commute is nothing more than a five to ten minute walk/bike/drive. The air is fresh and the water is pristine. Outdoor summer activities are a Northerners’ way of helping cope with what can be long winters. Throughout the summer months, in some communities, the sun does not set for upwards of 60 days and the temperature reaches into the 30° Celsius range in most communities. There is an abundance of hiking trails, camp grounds, lakes and mountains to keep residents outdoors throughout the summer months. During the winter most communities plan indoor activities through the local government. For the adventurous there is cross-country skiing, sledding, ice fishing and many more ways to entertain you in the outdoors, where temperatures can drop well below zero!

The physical location and size of our communities help create a balanced lifestyle between your work commitments and extracurricular activities you enjoy outside of work hours.  

Flexible Work Hours

Depending on the operational requirements of your job with the GNWT it is possible to work flexible hours. Regular work hours run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Flexible work hours allow employees to complete their regular 7.5 work day between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Compressed Work Week

An employee can work extra hours each day and in doing so increases days off.  For example, an employee can work an extra 50 minutes a day and have an additional day off every two weeks.  Employees don’t work extra hours above their regularly scheduled 37.5 or 40 hour work week but fit those hours into nine days instead of ten.


The GNWT offers employees a variety of paid leave.  Employees earn 16.5 days in each of the first two years of their employment.  Annual leave increases incrementally to a maximum of 35 days after 20 years of employment.  In addition all employees get 5 Mandatory Leave with Pay days in the December holiday season.  Operational requirements prevent some staff from taking this time in December, so they can take this paid time off at a different time of the year.  Other types of leave offered by the GNWT include: Maternity Leave, Special Leave, Winter Bonus Days and Deferred Leave.
