Job Information

Through the Internship Program, Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) departments recruit qualified, post-secondary Northern graduates into positions in a line of work related to their field of study. Interns receive valuable work experience and have the opportunity to apply their theoretical and academic knowledge in a practical, real world context and gain exposure to the GNWT as an employer.

Intern placements are available to northern graduates. A northern graduate is an individual who has graduated with a diploma or degree from a designated post-secondary institution within a 24 month period prior to applying to the Internship Program or will complete all academic requirements for his/her program within 6 months of applying to the Internship Program and falls within one of the following designated groups:

  • Is an Indigenous Aboriginal Persons
  • Is an Indigenous Non-Aboriginal Persons
  • Is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident; and is considered “Ordinarily Resident” for at least 3 years immediately prior to the start of his/her program with a designated post-secondary institution.

How to Apply to the Program

Step 1

Submit your cover letter and current copy of your resume through the Internship Program posting listed on Erecruit.

Step 2

For applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, an email will be sent indicating that they have been registered to the Internship Program. Registered applicants are retained on file for two years following the successful completion of their post-secondary program.

Step 3

Registered applicants are required to apply on internship job postings listed on the GNWT careers website. Internship postings will be posted online mid-December.  Please note that applications to any intern job posting will only be accepted if you are registered to the Internship Program . As with all staffing in the GNWT, the Affirmative Action Policy is applied in staffing internship positions.

The salary for the Internship Program is dependent on duties assigned.

Criminal Records Check

Employment in some positions requires an acceptable criminal records check.  Possession of a criminal record will not necessarily disqualify candidates from further consideration.
