Department Information

The Department of Health and Social Services works under the direction of the Minister and Deputy Minister, in partnership with the Health and Social Services Authorities, to support the health and wellbeing of people across the NWT through planning, development, evaluation and reporting on program and service delivery.

Job Information

During the Internship, the incumbent will support the SEHA an Environmental Health (EH) Unit in contaminants research, synthesis and dissemination of information.  This includes developing and maintaining web-based applications, internal databases and public resources, as well as in the preparation of reports, public resources and briefing materials for use by the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer, and external territorial and international partners.


The Intern researches and prepares draft environmental health policies, standards and departmental standard operating procedures (DSOPs) in consultation with the SEHA and the EH Unit.  This positon supports the Department’s participation in the Northern Contaminants Committee, as we as emerging NWT regional research forums.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

An undergraduate degree in an environmental science or environmental public health related field.

Intern placements are available to Northern graduates.  A northern graduate is an individual who has graduated with a diploma or degree from a designated post-secondary institution within a 24 month period prior to applying to the Internship Program or will complete all academic requirements for his/her program within 6 months of applying to the Internship Program. Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $33.44 per hour (approximately $69,555. per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450.
