Job Information
Located in Inuvik, the Adult Services Social Worker reports directly to the Regional Manager, Mental Health and Addiction Services. This position is responsible for management of the Adult Services Program for a client base from any of the eight (8) communities in the Beaufort Delta Region: Inuvik, Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, Sachs Harbour, Paulatuk and Uluhaktok. The population of the Beaufort Delta region as a whole is approximately 7500.
This position provides case management to adults with brain injury and/or developmental disabilities, and chronic mental health and addictions issues. This position is responsible for: intake, assessment and referral to southern placements; case management of our of territory clients; the provision of outreach services to a caseload of additional clients residing in supportive living environments outside of the BDR region, but within the NWT requiring information, support, referral to other community resources along with related joint-case planning with other agencies .
The ASSW plays a key liaision role with non-government organizations providing programs/services which impact cases. This position also participates at key joint stakeholder meetings, such as the Out-of-Territory Placement Committee Meetings as requested.
The incumbent works with on various regional and territorial committees to ensure that Adult Services Programs are delivered in an integrated Primary Health Care approach resulting in the most appropriate care delivered in the most appropriate setting with proper assessment, care planning, cultural sensitivity, and implementation of care and evaluation of outcomes.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must be sensitive to the geographical and cultural needs of the people and understand how the community and cultural needs impact the delivery of health and social services;
- Must have knowledge of aboriginal history and be familiar with diverse cultures in the region;
- Must be knowledgeable with theoretical approaches for addressing mental health and addictions issues, group and family dynamics, counseling theories, tools for assessing clients with psychiatric disabilities, developmental disabilities or brain injury, mental health diagnosis;
- Must have skills in community development, program planning, development and evaluation of programs, and policies and structures pertaining to health and social programs;
- Ability to conduct presentations and facilitation to groups;
- Must have conflict resolution skills, group therapy skills, and facilitation, negotiation and mediation skills;
- Excellent interpersonal communications skills both written and verbal;
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals who are cognitively impaired;
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals with chronic mental illness;
- Ability to provide brief counseling and support in area of bereavement.
- Computer literacy;
- Must have excellent analytical skills;
- Ability to work effectively as a team member;
- Knowledge and experience working with families and children
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
- A Master’s Degree in Social Work:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or psychiatric nursing with 2 years related experience;
- A Bachelor’s Degree in a related social science discipline with 3 years of related experience;
- Diploma in Social Work with 4 years of related experience;
- Equivalencies will be considered on a base by case basis.
