About the Job
At the Department of Lands, we strive to be leaders and innovators in Northern land and resource management. We provide land management decisions and recommendations on the acquisition, lease, sale, or other dispositions of public lands while respecting the principles of land use sustainability, and ecological, social, cultural, and economic values.
The Department of Lands advances the territorial vision of land and resource management in the NWT through the legislative, regulatory and policy system and through the delivery of a robust and effective enforcement and compliance program. The Department’s reach is broad because the use of land impacts the operations and mandates of other departments, and private sector development. It engages in large-scale planning, and conducts broad legislative and policy reviews to inform government-wide strategic advice about land and resource management. Together these functions enhance the planning, management, and administration of land in a sustainable way.
The Department works closely with NWT resource management boards because it coordinates inter- and intra- department and government processes including environmental assessments (EAs), reclamation securities, GNWT input on federal legislative amendments and regulatory activities affecting land and water management, environmental assessment policy reviews and land use planning.
The Department’s Informatics division also leads the planning, development and implementation of information and technology related services, including geomatics services, to three departments: Lands, Industry, Tourism and Investment, and Environment and Natural Resources.
The Department of Lands is accepting applications from Northern residents for the Resource Management Officer (RMO) I Training Program. The RMO I Training Program is seeking candidates that have a desire for on-the-land work, but are also able to qualify as full Inspectors, and able to gain entry and successfully complete the Natural Resources Diploma Program, if they have not already completed this program.
The RMO 1 Training program is a combination of formal and on-the-job training. If required, the formal training comes in the form of the Natural Resource Technology Program at Aurora College and specific GNWT training courses. The on-the-job training will be scheduled as time permits around school terms at Aurora College, and after the formal training is completed. Interested applicants must be able to pass a medical fitness test, and hold a class 5 driver’s license. The candidate should have experience working within a team environment, as well as independently, and have the ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Basic computer skills are also required. A Boating License and Firearms Acquisition Certificate would be an asset, as would cross-cultural experience. Acceptance to the program is contingent upon the following minimum requirements:
•High School Diploma or equivalent
•At least one year of on-the-land experience. This could be through trapping, guiding, firefighting, as a Canadian Ranger, or a combination of the various on the land experiences.
•Possession of a valid class 5 driver's license
•Satisfactory criminal records check and verification of identity
•Satisfactory medical assessment

Driver's License Requirement

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
The salary for this position starts at $26.089 per hour (approximately $50,873. per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $10,192.
