Department Information

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority –Stanton Territorial Hospital (NTHSSA)  is offering challenging nursing work and work life balance. Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) is a 100 in-patient bed accredited facility, located in Yellowknife Northwest Territories (NWT). STH is the referral center for approximately 43,000 NWT residents and 5,900 residents from the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. STH provides health care services to adults and children on an inpatient/outpatient and outreach basis in order to restore health with dignity.  STH maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property, recognizing the health hazards associated with tobacco in the workplace, both to smokers and non-smokers alike.  Therefore, Stanton maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property.

 

Job Information

Territorial Hospital is the referral center for approximately 43,000 NWT residents and 5,900 residents from the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Reporting to the Manager, Medicine & Outpatient Care and working in collaboration with the Manager of Official Languages at the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and all French Language Services Coordinators throughout the NTHSSA-Regions, the Certified French Medical Interpreter coordinates French interpretation services for patients and clients of Stanton Territorial Hospital, while remotely coordinating the provision of over-the-phone interpretation services, telehealth interpretation services, third-party interpretation services, and French language facilitation. This may include procuring, coordinating, and managing contracted services if required to meet demand. The incumbent will also be expected to develop and support the delivery of medical terminology workshops for health and social services providers throughout the Health and Social Services System.

The provision of professional interpretation services has immediate and direct impacts on patients’ treatments. Interpreters help clinical staff to determine the patients/clients’ condition, ensure they understand treatments and medical instructions as well as procedures and results. This position plays a key role in the provision of quality service by assuring the provision of certified medical interpretation services and by building bridges with French speaking patients/clients.

The work performed by the incumbent will be in accordance with the Official Languages Act and Regulations, the GNWT Strategic Plan on French Language Communications and Services, the GNWT Standards for French Communications and Services and the Department of Health and Social Services French Language Communications and Services Operating Plan well as the NTHSSA’s mission and values. The Certified French Medical Interpreter will also work with other medical interpreters and language facilitators to develop best practices.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•    Advanced level of spoken and written bilingualism (French/English)
•    Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills in both English and French.
•    Knowledge of interpretation practices in high risk, high stress settings.
•    Knowledge of medical terminology and areas of medical specialization.
•    Knowledge and understanding of the role and responsibilities of health and social services providers along with the services provided.
•    Knowledge and understanding of diverse francophone cultures.
•    Ability to interact well with other health care professionals, all levels of staff, and patients and families.
•    Knowledge of social services terminology.
•    Ability to work with others to inform patients and their families (where applicable) on services and care options. 
•    Demonstrated customer service skills and client-focused orientation.
•    High degree of tact, diplomacy and discretion.
•    Demonstrated computer skills, including the ability to work with a wide range of computer applications including Microsoft Office.
•    Facilitation and presentation skills.
•    Ability to meet deadlines and respond effectively to frequently changing deadlines.
•    Ability to interpret with accuracy and great attention to detail, in stressful situations.
•    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences with varying levels of background knowledge and education.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:


Diploma/Degree in health/allied health profession with a diploma, degree or certification in French/English interpretation program.

OR

Diploma  from  a  recognized  and  certified  French/English  Interpreter  program,  or  equivalent training along with 2 years related experience in a health care setting.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is from $38.98 per hour to $46.54 per hour (approximately $76,011 - $90,763 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,450

Equivalencies

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
