Located in Fort Smith, the Registered Midwife works in a busy and interesting practice with challenges and rewards unique to a rural, remote site. The Registered Midwife is responsible to provide primary midwifery services to clients to ensure safe and appropriate care that contributes to healthy pregnancies, safe births, and healthy beginnings for mothers and babies. The midwifery team works collaboratively with other healthcare providers at the regional and territorial levels to coordinate and manage appropriate care for all women, including those with complicated pregnancies. The Fort Smith Health Centre is a level 1 facility staffed by a multidisciplinary team of primary care and allied health service providers. Specialist services and surgical back-up are provided at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife, one hour away by air.

Located in Fort Smith, the Registered Midwife reports to the Regional Manager, Acute Care for operational requirements. The Registered Midwife is a credentialed member of the NTHSSA practitioner staff and reports to the Area Medical Director for clinical management as described in the Medical and Professional Staff Bylaws. The Registered Midwife is guided and supported in professional practice by the territorial clinical lead(s) for women and children’s health and midwifery.
The level of knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position may typically be attained through the completion of a Baccalaureate degree in Midwifery (Health Sciences), or assessed through a Prior Learning and Experience Assessment (PLEA) program within a Canadian province, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in delivering midwifery care as a primary care provider. The individual must be eligible for professional licensing in accordance with the Midwifery Profession Act and must maintain mandatory certifications as identified in the Continuing Competency Program for Registered Midwives in the NWT, including Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, Neonatal Resuscitation Provider, Fetal Health Surveillance , and Emergency Obstetrical Skills.

The salary for this position starts at $53.31 per hour (approximately $103,954 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $6,450.
