Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Regional Manager, Public Health, the Community Dietician provides consultant, resource and direct service delivery to a culturally diverse population
The incumbent works to improve the health of the entire service population and to reduce inequities among population groups. They work in the context of the ISDM, a model mandated by the Department of Health and Social Services that directs how health and social programs is delivered in the NWT with the purpose of promoting health and independence and assuring continuity of care and integration of that care. Close liaison, information sharing, teaching and collaborative relationships are maintained with community stakeholders, NTHSSA staff, community groups, aboriginal organizations, local businesses, Stanton and DHSS. The incumbent works with each partner group to identify nutrition program needs and prioritize, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate programs and services.
The incumbent supports dietician services in the NTHSSA Diabetes Education Program.. The incumbent works with clients to facilitate the adoption of self-management of their care and adoption of health related behaviors for the prevention and management of diabetes. The incumbent also is responsible for ensuring key messaging promoting healthy lifestyle choices and prevention messaging for diabetes is delivered in the broader population
Through the promotion of healthy food choices, emphasizing local and traditional foods, and the development of community programs, the position can impact on the total health care of all residents through the reduction of medical and travel expenditures as a result of chronic health diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
The incumbent is responsible for advising, developing and promoting Healthy Public Policy on nutrition within NTHSSA and making recommendations to the Regional Manager, Public Health.
On a typical day, the incumbent may travel within and/or to a community, plan, deliver and evaluate nutrition services, field telephone requests from the community and health authority staff; review new materials; participate in meetings of community groups working on nutrition and health-related issues. The incumbent may also provide services through telehealth to both YK Region and other Regions within the NTHSSA.
Typically, the qualifications would be attained by the completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nutrition. In addition to a Baccalaureate Degree in Nutrition, completion of an accredited Dietetic Internship program, or a Master's degree in Nutrition. Two years or more ofrecent community nutrition experience is required.
Current registration with a provincially regulated association of Registered Dietitians is required as well as registration with Dietitians of Canada. Must also possess a valid NWT driver's license.
Ability to work towards practice hours and completion of Certified Diabetes Educator over the next 5 years.

Driver's License Requirement
A mandatory requirement for this position is a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain proof of current up-to-date immunization status.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
The salary range for this position is from $46.52 per hour to $55.57 per hour (approximately $90,714 - $108,362.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
