Job Information

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is the single provider of all health and social services in the Northwest Territories (NWT), with the exception of Hay River and Tlicho regions, covering 1.2 million square kilometers and serving approximately 43,000 people, including First Nations, Inuit, Metis, and non-aboriginals. Health and social services includes the full range of primary, secondary and tertiary health services and social services including family services, protection services, care placements, mental health, addictions, and developmental activities, delivered by more than 1,400 health and social services staff.

Under the direction of the Healthy Family Program Coordinator, the Home Visitor position works to optimize the home environment for the physical, mental and emotional well-being of children (ages 0- 6 years) who are at risk of being developmentally delayed. The position assists in strengthening the parent-child relationship by improving parenting skills, reducing family stress and meeting the needs of parents. The position works closely with other government and non-government resources in the provision and coordination of services to children and families. All duties will be performed on a shift basis with shifts developed to accommodate parent schedules and demands for meeting time during regular work days. The Home Visitor will work a 37.5 hour work week.

Clientele include families with target children identified by the screening and Parent Survey tools used by the Home Visitation Program, other family members, community members and other health care providers. The Home Visitor will provide regular long term contact and support of families primarily through visits to the clients' home. The Home Visitor will be responsible for assisting the family in establishing goals and a plan for the accomplishment of those goals, as well as the screening of typical growth and development of children served by the program.

The Home Visitor must have experience in child development and parenting skills, prenatal and post-natal care, universal precautions in order to protect the caregiver and client from the transmission of infections and child management strategies (nonviolent). Typically the above would be attained by:
• Certificate in Early Childhood Development, Social Work, or equivalent
• 1 year Experience working with children 0-6 and their families
• Current First Aid and CPR (including infant) certification or willingness to acquireNon-Violent Crisis intervention or similar
• Personal injury Prevention training (WHIMIS, Lifting and Carrying Techniques) or willing to obtain
• ASIST training (Applied Suicide intervention Skills Training) or willing to obtain

Driver's License Requirement

A mandatory requirement for this position is a valid Class 5 Driver's License

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $36.03 per hour (approximately $70,259 per annum) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $14,356.
