Medical Radiation Technologist

Join our health care team as a Medical Radiation Technologist. Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) is a 100 in-patient bed accredited facility, located in Yellowknife Northwest Territories (NWT). STH is the referral center for approximately 43,000 NWT residents and 5,900 residents from the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. STH provides health care services to adults and children on an inpatient/outpatient and outreach basis in order to restore health with dignity. STH maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property, recognizing the health hazards associated with tobacco in the workplace, both to smokers and non-smokers alike. Therefore, Stanton maintains a tobacco free environment within the building and throughout the property.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department handles approximately 46,000 Diagnostic Imaging examinations on an annual basis (approximately 100-150 exams per day). Practitioners refer patients to the Diagnostic Imaging Department. The production of diagnostic images (i.e. xrays and ultrasound) is a critical function within the Stanton Territorial Hospital.
As a MRT most of the exams will be conducted on an individual basis where the incumbent works directly with the patient and is responsible for all images produced. In addition, on a scheduled basis the incumbent will be required to provide hands-on support and patient care during invasive examinations conducted by a Radiologist (i.e. including but not limited to starting IVs - IV Push, preparation for Barium Enemas, etc.). During these invasive procedures the incumbent will be responsible for all preparation of the procedure including explaining the procedure to the patient, acquiring the images and post procedure care as required. The incumbent will has assess the risks for allergies and co-morbidities such as diabetes before injecting contrasts and be prepared for any potential allergic reactions to the contrast. Challenges include patient being unprepared, tight schedule and language issues.As a MRT within Stanton the incumbent also provides functional expertise to nurses within the communities during the production of basic x-rays ( extremities and chests).
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the continued operation of all radiographic equipment such as the x-ray machines, fluoroscopy machine, C-Arm, computed tomography (CT) equipment and direct radiography (DR) equipment. The incumbent provides x-ray services (fluoroscopy) in the Operating Room for surgeons using C- Arm. In some instances, the portable X-Ray machine must be utilized.
Within the Diagnostic Imaging Unit the 5 Medical Radiation Technologists will be required to provide on-call coverage during the evening and on rotating weekends to provide x-rays and CT scans that follow established departmental protocols, as well as do shift rotation through the Yellowknife Primary Health Care Clinic.

This level of knowledge is typically acquired through the successful completion of a minimum of Diploma or Degree in Medical Radiation Technology with certification and registration with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT).

The salary range for this position is from $43.51 per hour to $51.98 per hour (approximately $84,845 to $101,361) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
