Department Information

The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.

Job Information

The Senior Financial Reporting Advisor, under the direction of the Manager, Financial Reporting & Collections, analyzes information provided by departments and other entities (boards and agencies) of the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) in order to prepare the Consolidated and Non-consolidated Public Accounts of the Government, including all necessary working papers required by the Office of the Auditor General, within the timelines established by Legislation. As well, the incumbent conducts an annual review of entities which may be required to be included in the GNWT Government Reporting Entity (GRE) to meet the financial reporting standards of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants" (CICA) Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB). The incumbent is additionally responsible for providing professional advice, assistance, training and interpretation to Departments and Government entities on issues relating to generally accepted accounting principles, the Financial Administration Act, Financial Administration Manual and the PSAB Handbook. Research of proposed accounting standards and preparing draft responses to PSAB on these proposed standards is performed by the incumbent.


Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by completion of a recognized accounting designation such as CA, CGA, CMA, CPA and five years progressive public practice accounting experience including 2 years' experience in the preparation of complex consolidated and non-consolidated financial statements, and working papers.

The salary range for this position is from $58.01 per hour to $69.30 per hour (approximately $113,119 - $135,135.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
