Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information


The Yellowknife Airport is the NWT gateway airport and handles in excess of 500,000 passengers and 58,000 flights annually. Inadequate maintenance of runways, taxiways, and aprons during extreme conditions has the propensity to cause personal injury and/or death, loss of permits and millions of dollars in damages.

Planning, organizing and supervising the operational and structural repairs and maintenance of runways, taxiways, aprons, storm drainage systems, parking areas and ramps.

Typically attained by

High school diploma with 3-5 years of relevant experience (all aspects of airfield and ground maintenance), and at least 2 years' experience in a supervisory position.

Additional Requirements
• Airfield Maintenance Specialist Certification Program.
• Class 1 Drivers' License with Airbrakes Endorsement.
• Restricted Radio Operators' License.
• Propane Refueling Certification.
• WHMIS Certification
• First Aid and CPR Certification.
• Air side Vehicle Operators Permit.
• Training in airport safety and security.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is from $44.83 per hour to $53.55 per hour (approximately $93,246.40 - $111,384.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
