Department Information

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies.  INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information


Reporting to the Manager of Risk Management and Safety, the position is located in Yellowknife and oversees all GNWT buildings, works, and utilities found in NWT communities. The position annually influences the expenditure of $12.3 million in O&M funds and approximately $5 million in chargebacks to client departments. The recommendations, advice and decisions made by the position impacts the safety of occupants and/or users (e.g., inspections for asbestos or other potentially hazardous materials) and the availability of assets to users. The position is constantly involved in multi-tasking and having to switch from providing advice, auditing, or inspecting, assessing regional requests for projects, training or reporting. The position is also faced with changing priorities when required to address an immediate problem (e.g., a maintenance issue that threatens to close a building) or to represent the department on an interdepartmental committee dealing with an emerging issue, such as the Territorial Emergency Response Committee.

Typically attained by:

- Degree in Engineering with 5 years related experience; OR,
- Completion of Certified Technologist program; OR
- Journeyman's certification in mechanical or electrical trades plus 10 years’ experience working in a variety of progressively responsible operation and maintenance situations (with buildings, works, vehicles, equipment and utilities) including 2 years’ experience with budget planning, development and control and 2 years working in a cross-cultural environment.
