Job Information

The Consumer Affairs & Division Coordinator (the Coordinator) coordinates the annual consumer licensing cycle, and provides a first point of contact for consumer inquiries and complaints. The position provides financial services to the Public Safety Division to ensure that internal financial procedures and controls are adhered to and that transactions are processed in a timely manner in accordance with the requirements of the Financial Administration Act. The position also provides administrative support to all sections within the Division to ensure effective continuity of business.

Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Director, Public Safety, the Coordinator is primarily responsible for administering an annual consumer licensing cycle; managing all aspects of revenue collection from regulatory fees; and providing administrative support to the Division.

MACA's Public Safety Division consists of four (4) distinct sections: the consumer affairs section serves to protect the interests of consumers and administer business licensing requirements and educating the public; the emergency management office is responsible for coordinating territorial emergency preparedness and response activities; the Office of the Fire Marshal conducts regulatory reviews to very code compliance for construction projects, and it manages the efficient and effective delivery of the fire protection and prevention programs; and the 9-1-1 section operates the NWT's Basic 9-1-1 system. The Consumer Affairs and Division Coordinator works closely with a Senior Policy Officer to administer the Consumer Protection Act, Lotteries Act, Real Estate Agents' Licensing Act and Business Licensing Act.

The Consumer Affairs section administers an annual licensing cycle for businesses, vendors, direct sellers, collection agencies and real estate professionals which occurs January to April. Approximately 350 business licenses are issued annually. Combined with plan review fees, revenue collection from consumer licensing amounts to approximately $200,000 annually.

MACA provides a free mediation service to NWT consumers who wish to complain about a service or product offered by a business. The process is voluntary and recommendations are non-binding. The Consumer Affairs section is the first point of contact for the receipt of consumer complaints. Approximately 5-10 complaints are received annually.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
Diploma in Business Administration or another relevant field, including basic financial management coursework and 2-3 years related experience.

Salary Information

The salary range for this position is from $35.43  per hour to $42.31 per hour (approximately $69,088 - $82,504) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
