Department Information
The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Job Information
Located in Hay River and reporting to the Supervisor, Maintenance Facilities, this position is responsible for providing maintenance and repair services for the department's mobile equipment Fleet and provides warehouse services for the departments highways maintenance camps and airports. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic implements planned maintenance and enters work orders as required.
Some of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position are:
- Knowledge of standard heavy equipment repair methods, tools, equipment and techniques. Includes use of diagnostic equipment.
- Knowledge of all equipment, from heavy to light, mobile equipment to stationary units such as generator sets;
- Able to diagnose and repair light-truck, medium trucks, large engines (gasoline and diesel) generators, water pumps, gas and gas powered tools.
- Ability to sign off equipment, train apprentices mechanics, and carry out duties of the position effectively
Typically attained by:
- Journeyman Heavy Equipment Mechanic Certification with Interprovincial Red Seal
- Minimum Grade 12 education

The salary range for this position is from $42.77 per hour to $51.08 per hour (approximately $88,961 to 106,246 per annum.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $4,711.
