Department Information

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

Located in Hay River and reporting to the Manager, Sheriff's Services, the Relief Sheriff's Officer provides security and civil enforcement services for Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, Territorial Court, and Justice of the Peace Court. The Relief Sheriff's Officer provides court and building security, exercises statutory authority in accepting and processing documents, administers the jury management system, and trains and guides bailiffs. This position holds the following statutory appointments: Deputy Sheriff, designation as a Peace Officer, and Notary Public.

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are:

  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret legislation as they relate to Sheriff's duties;
  • Knowledge of court and jury security practices and procedures;
  • Ability to react quickly to critical altercations in court;
  • Ability to perform duties while dealing with difficult people in a stressful environment;
  • Ability to write and communicate clearly in order to interpret and relay information;
  • Maintain a level of physical fitness to complete the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE).

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • a certificate or course work in law enforcement with one year of practical experience in a court security or enforcement environment with a significant amount of time spent demonstrating and enforcing security practices/procedures, interpreting legislation, and responding to inquiries from the public and enforcement agencies.
  • The incumbent must have a valid Class 4 driver's licence, current First Aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator Certificates.
  • A medical certification of fitness to perform the duties associated with the position is a requirement.

This job opening is for a Relief position where there are no established hours of work on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and may be required to report to work on an as and when required basis for facilities where services operate on a daily basis throughout the entire year.
