The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. Job Information
Located in Yellowknife, as the Paralegal, Property Registries, you support the Registrar in managing the Land Titles Office and Personal Property Registry. You hold statutory appointments as Deputy Registrar under the Land Titles Act and Personal Property Security Act. You have authority to review and approve registrations of all property interests in privately owned land across the Northwest Territories, which includes land owned by municipal and Indigenous governments. These interests are defined and governed by the Land Titles Act, Condominium Act, Northwest Territories Lands Act and a wide variety of other Territorial and Federal legislation. The Personal Property Registry supports a legal system where financers of personal property protect their interest in the property collateral by filing notice of their interest in order to establish legal priority against other creditors or subsequent purchasers of the property.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and approve property registrations for compliance with legislation.
- Ensure legal documents meet statutory and registry requirements.
- Support lawyers, paralegals, and GNWT staff in land-related matters.
- Refer complex issues to the Paralegal Team Lead or Registrar.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Specialized knowledge of real estate law, Torrens principles, and conveyancing.
- Strong understanding of the principles of legal surveying and survey plan interpretation.
- Ability to analyze legal documents and to translate registration matters into business processes and computer programming.
- Clear and professional communication both orally and in writing with the public, legal profession and stakeholders.
- Proven attention to detail and ability to review and analyze legal documents.
Key Qualifications:
- Paralegal diploma.
- 3 years paralegal experience.
- 1 year experience using registry computer systems or related information technology.
Acceptable Equivalencies:
- Paralegal certificate + 4 years experience + 1 year experience using registry computer systems or related information technology.
- Paralegal degree + 2 years experience + 1 year experience using registry computer systems or related information technology.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $45.34 per hour to $54.15 per hour (approximately $88,413 - $105,593), plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
