The traditional name of the settlement, Games Lake (pronounced Gah-May), was named for the elder who first camped there and means “rabbit net lake”. Gameti is a traditional Tlicho community about halfway between Great Slave and Great Bear lakes. Subsistence living, such as fishing, hunting and trapping, is still a big part of the local economy. However, rotational employment in diamond mining provides high paying jobs. This Tlicho community operates a motel. The community is accessed by air year round and winter ice road. Jean Wetrade Gamètì School offers classes from K-9. There’s a health centre, general store and community hall.
