Social distancing for long haul truck drivers

To maintain supply lines and the flow of commerce, long haul truck drivers are exempt from the current Northwest Territories (NWT) border closure.

What does social distancing mean?

This means making changes in your everyday routines in order to minimize close contact with others, including:

  • Limiting the amount of people you come into contact with, which lowers the risk of passing or catching the virus;
  • Avoiding crowded places and non-essential gatherings;
  • Avoiding common greetings, such as handshakes; and
  • Keeping a distance of at least 2 metres from others, as much as possible.

The following are additional guidelines for those who are permitted to work and move between communities during this pandemic. They supplement the Orders of the Chief Public Health Officer, and information provided by Health and Social. They are also in line with guidance issued by the Worker’s Safety and Compensation Commission on workplace safety and risk assessments.

How to social distance

Avoid

  • Socializing within 2 metres of other people in places such as gas stations, truck stops, pick-up and delivery points, and accommodations;
  • Spending time at public access points, including delivery destinations, crowded rest stops and stores, and driver lounges;
  • Working with others in confined trailers; and • Visiting people.

Be Careful With

  • Switching vehicles with other drivers;
  • Assisting with loading or unloading cargo;
  • Spending time in your vehicle or accommodations;
  • Connecting with friends, family, and colleagues using a cell phone, satellite phone, or social media; and
  • Using debit or credit cards for purchases instead of cash.

Remember

  • If you have to overnight, you are not permitted to leave your accommodations, and when you have completed your delivery, you are required to leave the territory immediately. If you begin to feel sick, you are required to go into self-isolation immediately and contact the health numbers below to arrange for testing; and
  • Do not report to work if you or a member of your household is sick.

When you’re travelling between communities, make sure to:

  • Monitor yourself for COVID-19 symptoms like fever, cough, or difficulty breathing;
  • Wash your hands frequently and use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol when soap and water is not available;
  • At least once a day, disinfect the interior of your cab using sanitizing wipes or a diluted bleach solution, focussing on cargo door handles, seatbelt, steering wheel, mirrors, gear shifts, control knobs, buttons, latches, handles, satellite, personal protective equipment, clipboards, and pens;
  • Self-isolate on days off;
  • Bring lots of food, water, and supplies in case you develop symptoms of COVID-19 and need to self-isolate where you are for 14 days;
  • If you develop symptoms, call the local health centre wherever you are and ask for further advice; and
  • Follow all safety and hygiene protocols issued by your employer, union, and/or governing body.

Self-declare to dispatch and to Protect NWT (1-833-378-8297) if you have come in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19, and follow the instructions provided.
