Wash often using soap for 20 seconds. Then dry. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if you have not washed your hands.

How to wash your hands properly

  1. Wet hands with warm water
  2. Apply soap
  3. For at least 20 seconds, make sure to wash:
    • palm and back of each hand
    • between fingers
    • under nails
    • thumbs
  4. Rinse well
  5. Dry hands well with paper towel
  6. Turn off tap using paper towel

How to use hand sanitizer properly

Use a hand sanitizer that contains 60% alcohol and rub it into your hands for at least 20 seconds. Make sure to rub:

  • palm and back of each hand
  • between fingers
  • under nails
  • thumbs

When you should wash your hands

Wash your hands often, especially:

  • after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing 
  • after visiting a public space, including public transport, markets and places of worship
  • after touching surfaces outside of the home
  • after touching money 
  • before, during and after caring for a sick or vulnerable person 
  • before and after eating. 

Always wash your hands:

  • after using the toilet 
  • before and after eating 
  • after handling garbage
  • after touching animals and pets 
  • after changing babies’ diapers or helping children use the toilet 
  • when your hands are visibly dirty.
