The Northwest Territories Film Commission is developing a five-year film strategy to follow, Take One: Northwest Territories Film Strategy and Action Plan. Since Take One, the NWT has since become known for award-winning films, circumpolar festivals, and one-of-a-kind stories.
The strategy will serve as a guide for film sector activities and investments by the Government of the Northwest Territories from 2021 to 2025 by identifying actions to strengthen the film industry.
Film and media are defined as screen-based storytelling available by broadcast, streaming, or download, along with virtual reality and interactive content.
For example, film and media does not include national broadcasters like the CBC or News/North.

Have Your Say
To inform the development of the strategy covering the next five years, the NWT Film Commission engaged with key stakeholders from across the NWT to help identify priority areas, challenges, opportunities, partnerships, and investments going forward.
Input was gathered using:
- An idea board to start big, open conversations on the future of film and media.
- A forum with targeted discussion to spark ideas and create conversation.
- An interview form that took approximately one hour to complete.
- A survey.
- Engagement portal.
The NWT Film Commission also worked with the NWT Professional Media Association to collect input from professionals across the territory.
Input will influence the GNWT’s work to strengthen the NWT’s media industries through programs, services, and initiatives.
