Residents were invited to provide input into a framework for physician-assisted dying.
In February 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada determined it is against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to prosecute a doctor for assisting someone with incurable suffering who wants to end his or her life.
Based on this Supreme Court decision, medical assistance in dying (MAID) is now legal in Canada.

Consultation packages were sent to targeted stakeholders and information was posted on the Department of Health Social Services’ website to encourage residents to provide feedback through a dedicated email address and / or regular mail.
The Department of Health and Social Services completed its initial consultation on suggestions for an NWT Physician-Assisted Dying Framework with stakeholders and the public in February 2016.
All comments and suggestions will be carefully considered as the framework is developed.
