The GNWT is proposing to implement entry level training requirements for drivers obtaining a Class 1 licence (semi-trailers and tractor trailers) for the first time.
The GNWT currently doesn't have training requirements for Class 1 drivers. Following the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy in 2018, there were renewed calls for mandatory entry level training in Canada.
Entry level training will result in more highly-skilled drivers in the trucking sector and help ensure the safety of all road users in the NWT. It will also align Class 1 licence requirements with other Canadian jurisdictions.
