Have your say on the proposed regulations under the new Corrections Act. The new Act was developed to modernize existing legislation which is over 43 years old. There have been significant philosophical changes in the corrections field since the 1980s, when the priority was focused on the good governance of the facility. Now the emphasis is placed on the rehabilitation of the offender. The new Act deals with procedural safeguards to ensure decisions are made in a fair and transparent manner, and also provides for offenders to have access to a complaints process to ensure inmates’ rights are respected. The new Act and associated regulations incorporate recognized corrections “best practices” in Canada as well as international standards.
