Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(December 6, 2013) - Good evening everyone, and thank you for joining us here at Canada Place this evening.

To many Canadians, the Northwest Territories is the great white north, land of polar bears, snow, ice, and minus 40 temperatures.  But there is so much more to our territory than that.

I have lived in the Northwest Territories for almost two decades, but I never get tired of viewing the Aurora Borealis in the winter skies. I want to share a story with you about one of these times.

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(November 7, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, tourism is a vital industry here in the Northwest Territories.  Of all sectors, tourism presents the greatest likelihood of creating economic opportunities in each Region, especially in the smaller communities.  This is especially true of our Aboriginal tourism sector.  Through the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, the Government of the Northwest Territories has been working with the Aboriginal Tourism Champions Advisory Council to advance and develop Aboriginal tourism in the NWT.

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(October 29, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, shortly after taking office – as we considered the economic opportunities, realities and challenges that lay ahead for our Territory – the 17th Assembly highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy to guide our economy though this time of unprecedented political and economic change.  Today I am pleased to inform Members that the Governance Committee has completed an Economic Opportunities Strategy for the NWT, which I will be tabling later today.

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(October 23, 2013) - Mr. Speaker, responsible oil and gas development has the potential to grow and diversify the Northwest Territories economy, and help create a sustainable, prosperous territory. Nowhere has this reality been more apparent than in the Sahtu Region. There is a lot to learn when it comes to ensuring our residents are prepared for rapid development, and that any development continues to minimize environmental and social impacts.

Ministers' Statements and Speeches

(September 19, 2013) - Good morning. I appreciate having the opportunity to speak today as part of the Alaska Oil and Gas Congress about how the Northwest Territories is working to find innovative solutions to getting our resources to market. This is a topic that is of great interest to us in the NWT, as it’s never been a question of having the resources, but how to get those resources from the ground to the marketplace.

Thank you for that introduction, and for the invitation to join you here today.

Chiefs, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, let me begin by saying what a pleasure it is to have this opportunity to promote the economic potential of the NWT.  It is something I get to do a lot of – and it is one of my favourite things to do.

Yellowknife embodies, in my mind, some of the greatest attributes of living, working and investing in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
