Mr.
Mr. Speaker, November is National Adoptions Awareness Month. It’s an opportunity to recognize families in the Northwest Territories who provide a remarkable service to children.
Mr. Speaker, in my travels across the Northwest Territories, meeting with communities, attending assemblies and numerous board meetings, I have heard one constant theme. Addictions are destroying our families and communities.
Mr. Speaker, smoking rates in the NWT are double the national average. In 2009, 36% of NWT residents 15 and older smoked, compared to 17% nationally. Smoking contributes to chronic diseases affecting the heart and lungs, and also causes cancer.
Mr. Speaker, effective human resource management of the NWT public service relies on partnerships between the Department of Human Resources and other Government departments, boards, and agencies.
June 12, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, at the appropriate time today I will table our action plan, “A Shared Path Towards Wellness - Mental Health and Addictions, 2012 – 2015.”
June 11, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
We all need to take a moment and say thank you to those Elders who have taught us, supported us and provided the wisdom that has guided our lives.
June 11, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, it is my privilege to rise today to express my support and appreciation for the great work accomplished by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
June 4, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, this Assembly has a vision of strong individuals, families and communities sharing in the benefits and responsibilities of a unified, environmentally sustainable and prosperous Northwest Territories. Our vision includes persons with disabilities.
