YELLOWKNIFE (February 11, 2013) – Northwest Territories films and film-makers are the focus this month, with screenings of NWT films at NWT Days in Ottawa and a traveling road tour heading out across the territory during February.

“Events such as NWT Days and other local film screenings held to raise the profile of our fantastic films and dedicated filmmakers,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay. “By investing in events that showcase the NWT and its films, we are encouraging companies to come film in the territory, inspiring people to come visit the spectacular landscape displayed in the films, and creating jobs and economic opportunities from the spin-off benefits of filming in the NWT.”

An NWT-themed mini film festival was held in Ottawa as part of NWT Days. Come and see the SPECTACULAR NWT through our Lens was a partnership between Western Arctic Moving Pictures (WAMP), the NWT Professional Media Association and the NWT Film Commission.

Feature films included Triumph of the Chill, a documentary about the Snowking winter festival held annually in Yellowknife each year, as well as Dene a Journey, the NWT’s first indigenous television series.

Also this month, WAMP is bringing a package of films from the sixth annual Yellowknife International Film Festival (YKIFF) into regions across the NWT with the support of Industry, Tourism and Investment.

The YKIFF Road Tour features several films from the NWT and NWT-filmmakers, as well as films from Nunavut, Alaska, and other parts of Canada.  The YKIFF Road Tour  will be in Norman Wells on February 12, Fort Smith on February 15, Fort Simpson on February 23 and 24, Inuvik on February 28 and was in Hay River on February 8.
