Get Active NWT Grants Offer Another Healthy Choice

Communiqués de presse

September 20, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), in partnership with the NWT Recreation and Parks Association (NWTRPA), is offering $750 Get Active NWT grants to community groups to help residents get active this year.

“The GNWT is working to build a healthy and active future by improving the physical and mental well-being of our people,” said Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod. “Get Active NWT events offer residents a fun way to be active, and encourage individuals and families to get involved in healthy activities with their friends and neighbours.”

Grant recipients must organize three physical activity events in their community. In the past people have organized Dene games, Nordic walking, snowshoeing, swimming, a cross-country ski loppet, elders fitness day, family Olympics, or a sports tournament.

“I encourage community groups to host a community physical activity event,” said Mr. Geoff Ray, Executive Director of the NWTRPA. “Physical activity makes you happy and it feels good, so get active NWT!”

First Air, as corporate sponsor, helps recognize the important role that the Get Active NWT organizers play in promoting healthy physical activity in our communities by donating two pairs of tickets that will be awarded to event organizers via ballot draw. First Air’s continued support of this program is just one small example of their commitment to helping build better communities across our territory.

The deadline to apply for funding this year is October 7, 2011.
