Celebrating Arts Week in the NWT

September 23, 2011 - September 23 to October 2, 2011 is NWT Arts Week, a celebration of the arts and fine crafts community and the significant cultural and economic contributions the arts and crafts sector makes to NWT communities.   Various events are being held to showcase the diverse talent of NWT artists, allow artists to develop their skills through workshops, and provide networking opportunities. In the NWT, the production of arts and fine crafts is also an important element of a diversified economy. 

Through its Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, the GNWT supports the marketing and business development of the arts and fine crafts sector with initiatives such as the NWT Artists Database and the NWT Arts Branding Logo Program and delivery of regional workshops on e-commerce and pricing. Funding to artist organizations such as the Aurora Arts Society and other marketing and arts activities such as regional festivals, trade shows is provided through the Support for Entrepreneur and Economic Development (SEED) Policy.The GNWT further recognizes that the spirit of creativity, collaboration and artistic experience can contribute to an enhance quality of life in the North – and serves to celebrate the NWT’s rich cultural heritage on a national stage.

Through the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), the GNWT provides financial support to NWT arts and cultural organizations and individual artists of all mediums. ECE also coordinates exhibits, festivals and workshops to help showcase the NWT’s rich artistic and cultural portfolio, in addition to fostering the further development and growth of northern artists.
