Agreement reached on Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway Project

News Releases

YELLOWKNIFE (October 16, 2014) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the contractor building the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway (ITH) have come to a confidential business agreement in accordance with the contract terms and conditions to continue construction on the highway. The agreement will not affect the overall project budget.

“The Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway project is creating significant training and employment opportunities for Northerners and will help reduce living costs in the region once completed, as well as contribute to economic opportunities and growth for the NWT,” said Transportation Minister Tom Beaulieu. “I am pleased that the GNWT and the contractor were able to find a solution that will see work on the highway continue during the upcoming winter construction season.”

The GNWT, contractor and independent engineer have reviewed the company’s request using processes set out in the ITH contract. As a result, the parties have identified a process for moving forward within the current project budget of $299 million. All proposed changes are part of the normal contracting process.

Discussions continue regarding potential issues identified by the contractor for future years.
