Workshop enhances Northwest Territories tourism capacity

YELLOWKNIFE (March 11, 2016) — A packed house of delegates left an energetic presentation with new knowledge on how to supercharge community tourism offerings in the Northwest Territories (NWT) this week.

From March 8 to 10, the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) funded and facilitated the Engaging Community Tourism Champions workshop at the Explorer Hotel.

The workshop was fully-subscribed, with 60 Community Leaders, Community Tourism Champions, Economic Development Officers, Tourism Development Officers, Senior Administrative Officers and others interested in tourism development partaking.

The workshop focused on building capacity of the delegates through emphasizing the importance of tourism to the NWT’s economy, providing concrete tools to improve tourism offerings, and supporting development of community tourism strategies and action plans.

The GNWT supports the need for economic diversification as part of the 18th Legislative Assembly’s mandate.

“This workshop will leave participants better equipped to spot tourism opportunities in their communities, prepare and plan for these opportunities, and execute their plans to better their communities. Tourism is an essential and growing part of our economy, and provides a solid opportunity for further expansion of our economic offerings. Investing in our frontline workers is an important part of strengthening the industry for a brighter economic future.”

  • Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment
