YELLOWKNIFE (February 11, 2016) – A celebration was held today to mark the completion of the Hamlet of Fort McPherson’s new four-bay parking garage. The new facility will provide much needed space within the community for storing and maintaining municipal vehicles and equipment.
“This new garage facility is a much needed piece of infrastructure and is the result of collaboration between the Hamlet of Fort McPherson, the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Federal Government”, said Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Robert C. McLeod. “The official opening of this facility shows the results of many months of hard work by people in the community of Fort McPherson.”
The four-bay garage is 4,500 sq. ft. in size and will house the community’s grader, loader dozer, bobcat and pickup trucks. The garage also has two banks of 5kW solar panels hooked up to a net metering system that will reduce energy costs for the hamlet.
“The Government of Canada is proud to have partnered with the Northwest Territories to construct this municipal storage and maintenance facility,” said Michael V. McLeod, Member of Parliament for Northwest Territories, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “We are working with our partners to support strong and sustainable communities across the country, and this new 4-bay garage will support community water, sewer and garbage collection services for many years to come.”
This project was partially funded through the Government of Canada’s Building Canada Plan, a federal program designed to help communities invest in core infrastructure priorities across Canada. The program and funding was administered by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.
The Government of the Northwest Territories is working closely with the Government of Canada to ensure that infrastructure funds are spent on priorities throughout the territory. The Northwest Territories’ total federal allocation for initiatives under the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund agreement is $185.8 million, and has been fully committed towards 63 priority infrastructure initiatives worth over $310 million.
