YELLOWKNIFE (October 23, 2015) – The Department of Health and Social Services’ annual Drop the Pop campaign will soon begin in schools across the NWT. The start of this year’s campaign is being marked by the announcement of winners from the 2014-2015 campaign
A total of 18 NWT schools are being recognized as winners for Drop the Pop activities last year. The schools promoted water as the best, most traditional drink in the North under the campaign theme of Water, Right from the Tap!
“Congratulations to all the winners as well as everyone who participates in the campaign every year,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernethy. “Drop the Pop has been very successful over the past several years in encouraging children to make healthy choices from a young age. Once again this year, I am extremely proud to see all the creative ways schools, students and communities are working to create healthy environments for learning, growth and development of our young people.”
The winning schools will share a total of $16,000 in cash prizes (see attached list).
The awards kick off the 2015-2016 Drop the Pop campaign. The theme for this year is Celebrating Successes, reflecting the 10th anniversary of the campaign. Since 2005-2006, students, teachers and other community partners have made Drop the Pop one of the most creative, fun and successful health campaigns in the NWT and we want to celebrate these successes with schools.
The Department of Health and Social Services (HSS) works closely with the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) to provide health promotion and prevention initiatives that encourage healthy eating.
The Healthy Choices Framework is the GNWT’s initiative to encourage NWT residents to make the right choices to protect their health, safety, and well-being. Healthy Eating is one of the pillars of the Framework intended to help meet the priority of the 17th Assembly to ensure a fair and sustainable health care system by investing in prevention, education, and awareness.

Backgrounder: Drop the Pop
This will be the 10th year of the pan-territorial campaign, which is part of the GNWT’s commitment to support Healthy Choices. Schools across the North that participated during the last school year were eligible to be acknowledged with a cash award for their efforts to promote healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.
It is estimated that sugary drink consumption – including pop and energy drinks – is very high in the NWT. Too much sugar leads to high rates of dental diseases such as cavities. Drinking too many sugary drinks has also been linked to childhood obesity.
Choosing water as an alternative over sugary drinks is always the best option. Under the theme of Water, Right from the Tap!, the 2014-2015 Drop the Pop campaign encouraged schools and their students to promote drinking water. Schools also conducted several activities that were intended to promote healthy choices. The overall campaign goal was to get young people to drink less pop and other sugary drinks.
