Tri-Party Memorandum of Understanding Signed in Support of NWT Community Governments

YELLOWKNIFE (May 17, 2016) The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), NWT Association of Communities (NWTAC),  and the Local Government Administrators of the NWT (LGANT), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) designed to improve collaborative support for community governments in the Northwest Territories.

The MOU was an outcome of meetings held in conjunction with NWTAC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) from May 5-8, 2016.  This year’s AGM marked the 50th anniversary of the NWTAC. The objective of the MOU is to strengthen partnerships through shared understanding of the mandates, roles, and responsibilities of the three organizations as they work together to support and strengthen community governments. The MOU commits the partners to a collaborative process when addressing the challenges related to developing best practices in community governance.

“The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding is a clear demonstration of our joint commitment to community governments. MACA’s mission is to work with community governments in supporting community residents. The NWTAC and LGANT are critical partners in strengthening community governments and community governance throughout the NWT.”
- Robert C. McLeod - Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs

“The NWTAC has long believed in the power of partnerships, and the effectiveness of leveraging our collective strengths to support our member communities in achieving their goals. We are pleased to formalize what has been a longstanding good relationship with our partners at MACA and LGANT, and I am confident that we will realize new potential through this memorandum of understanding in the interests of the communities of the NWT.”
- Charles Furlong - NWTAC President

“LGANT is pleased to renew this Agreement with its key strategic partners; MACA and the NWTAC.  The MOU recognizes the mandates, roles and responsibilities of each organization, and acknowledges LGANT’s primary role to support MACA and NWTAC as it relates to community government administrative matters.”
- Grant Hood - LGANT President
