Premier says Will for Consensus is Strong

News Releases

October 28, 2011 - Premier Bob McLeod says the Legislative Assembly will be the forum in which elected leaders can find and reach consensus for the good of the NWT.

In his first statement to the 17th Legislative Assembly as Premier, Mr. McLeod said that while challenges will be significant, the collective will to make things better for the NWT residents is strong.

“I am encouraged by the good will shown by Members and Aboriginal Leaders, to find better ways of working together,” he said.
“Each of us elected to this Assembly recognizes that our Territory is one of immense potential – and that realizing even a share of that potential can mean a vibrant and prosperous future for our people.”

The Premier, recognized for his ability to build relationships and consensus, spent his first days on the job reaching out to Aboriginal Leaders to find common ground that will allow the Territorial and Aboriginal Governments to advance discussions on issues such as Devolution.

“My immediate task as Premier is to build and maintain the consensus that it will take to move our Territory forward,” the Premier said today. “The evolution of our Territory is too critical and our Territory is too large – too diverse to proceed on this without some form of consensus.”
