Open house and committee meeting in Hay River promotes visibility and accessibility of Cabinet

HAY RIVER (September 8, 2016) – Premier Bob McLeod and the entire Cabinet met residents of Hay River during an open house held in Hay River last Thursday, September 1, 2016. The open house was preceded by a public meeting of the Environment and Economy Committee of Cabinet (COC) chaired by Minister Wally Schumann.

Over 80 people attended the open house, where residents had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Ministers about their priorities and issues. This is the third open house held since the beginning of this government as part of the mandate commitment to improve Cabinet accessibility. Further open houses will be held in Fort Simpson and Yellowknife next month.

Approximately 20 people attended the meeting of the COC, the first meeting of its kind Cabinet Ministers have ever held in public. Ministers discussed progress on the mandate commitments made by their departments and received a presentation on airships from Hybrid Enterprises/Lockheed Martin.

“The GNWT and is committed to hearing from all residents and to improving transparency and accountability. Community open houses are an important opportunity for all Ministers to hear directly from NWT residents about their priorities and concerns. Meeting in public, when appropriate, is an opportunity for citizens to see Ministers at work as they discuss how the GNWT mandate is being implemented and consider information from a variety of sources.”
- Bob McLeod, Premier
