YELLOWKNIFE (APRIL 8, 2016) — A program designed to assist artisans in the Northwest Territories (NWT) has proved successful in 2015.
The Fur and Hide Procurement Program — a function of the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program — provided nearly $1 million in economic benefit created from the program.
These are the best results yet recorded by the program, which aims to connect local artisans with fur products required for their creations.
The program sees the Government of the Northwest Territories’ Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) purchase furs and re-sell them at cost to NWT artisans; a revenue-neutral venture which improves market access to those creating traditional arts and crafts.
