YELLOWKNIFE (May 6, 2016) — An annual initiative to stimulate local interest, awareness and foot traffic for the tourism sector returns to Yellowknife tomorrow.
The Be a Tourist in Your own Town initiative will launch its second-year at the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce Spring Trade Show with the distribution of a coupon book full of deals and discounts for local tourism businesses and service providers.
With the coupons, Yellowknifers can see and experience their city through the eyes of tourists – enjoying services and activities that they may otherwise take for granted and with a wide array of promotional deals and chance to win exciting prizes.
The initiative is sponsored by the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) North Slave Regional Office in partnership with Northwest Territories Tourism (NWTT), the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce and the City of Yellowknife to support and strengthen the environment for local industry operators and service providers.
The GNWT’s support and investment for the tourism sector is an essential element of its work to realize a thriving economy for NWT residents through regional economic development and diversification.

- Tourism brought over $146 million in spending to the territorial economy in 2014-2015.
- Over 3,000 people took part in the promotion last year.
- The top prize in this year’s promotion is a three night, four day trip to Blachford Lake Lodge (July 1-4, 2016).
