Workshop series teaches Northern gardening skills

YELLOWKNIFE (May 9, 2016) – Growing season kicks off in the North Slave region today with the first in a series of exciting workshops for gardening enthusiasts.

The Grow Together Garden Series will bring monthly workshops designed to teach Northern gardening skills to Yellowknifers throughout the growing season.

The initiative is co-sponsored and facilitated by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) and the Yellowknife Community Garden Collective (YKCGC), with additional funding from the Government of Canada’s Growing Forward program.

The first workshop is entitled Food Gardening Growing – Tricks for Growing Fantastic Vegetables and will focus on soil health, crop selection and techniques to maximize yields North of 60.

ITI’s Lone Sorenson and YKCGC’s Sandra Mann will co-facilitate the class from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at SideDoor in downtown Yellowknife.

Quick facts

  • 2013’s Growing Forward 2 agreement allocated $6.1 million in federal and territorial funding over five years for agriculture initiatives in the NWT, including small-scale food production.
