Highway Conditions

Always check DriveNWT for the latest information on highway closures.

Road conditions can change quickly during construction, winter season, or extreme events like wildfire or flooding.

Travellers should drive with caution and always be prepared for delays or sudden road closures.

Road Safety

Road conditions can change quickly with little to no warning.

Plan your road trip

  • Plan for delays and road closures.

  • Pack basic supplies to last 72 hours. Ensure you have enough fuel, food, water and other supplies for the drive ahead.

  • Pack emergency supplies like a mask to reduce potential smoke exposure, blankets to keep warm in winter, etc.

  • You may need to find accommodation along the way if there are road closures.

 Drive safe

  • Obey all traffic signs, stops, and controls.

  • Follow directions from Highway staff working on the ground.

  • Watch for emergency crews and vehicles stopped on the side of the road. Slow down and give them as much space as possible when passing.

  • For medical emergencies call 9-1-1.

  • Note that cellular coverage is limited or unavailable along some sections of the highway.
