This study has been commissioned by the NWT-PAS Working Group to contribute to phase 1 of step 5 in the 8 step NWT-PAS. This report used existing data to provide a socio-economic characterization of the community of Fort Good Hope, describes the resource use patterns in the RRW and attempts to determine the economics of such patterns, describes the cultural importance of the RRW to the people of Fort Good Hope and provides a natural capital assessment framework for phase 2 of the NWT-PAS socioeconomic assessment.

The PAS process requires that as areas are identified, the known cultural, ecological and economic values are studied, documented and discussed. As part of the process for establishing a protected area in the Northwest Territories (NWT), an assessment of the potential socio-economic effects of designating a protected area is required. The NWT is currently assessing whether it should protect all or parts of the Ts‟ude niline Tu‟eyeta Candidate Protected Area, an area of about 15,000 square kilometres in the Sahtu Region, and has commissioned this study to assess the potential social and economic impacts on the adjacent community of Fort Good Hope.
