… in the Arctic, impiger and nigripes may be troublesome on warm days; probably because of its low temp threshold and its small size, it is (one of) the first species to emerge (e.g., at Churchill and Alaska), but those not attack in huge numbers like hexododontus at the tree line

Habitat
eggs are usually placed where the pond will first thaw the following spring, adapted to cold and windy conditions.. Larvae have the lowing temp threshold of any northern species. Where nigripes occurs, impiger are found in small interconnecting ditches and puddles between polygons fromed by ice wedging, where nigripes does not occur, impiger will occupy larger tundra ponds
