In the prairies it occurs in arid, often sandy places but is also present in some alpine areas of the Rockies. It is said to feed principally on grasses and may be a pest of crops in the prairie region.

Confirmed range approximately 50,000 km2 (Catling 2008). Species likely confined to area around and south of Great Slave Lake. Potential record from Daring Lake unconfirmed and more likely to be A. arcticus.
