Alaska to Nova Scotia, south to northeastern North Dakota, southern Michigan, and northern Pennsylvania. Levi (1971) notes the similarity of the range to that of black spruce and tamarack, both of which are regarded as typical bog trees (Dondale et al. 2003).

Only one record of this species has been made for the NWT. This record is in the Mackenzie Delta, near the Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula (Dondale et al. 2003).
