Distribution

The minimum area polygon for this species in the Norhwest Territories is approximately 215,000 km sq. based on locality records. This species is also present in all surrounding territories and provinces (Griffiths 1991b) and is likely more widespread, hence range G was selected.

Number of Occurrences

This species is present in at least 6 localities in the Northwest Territories: Aklavik (Griffiths 1991b), in the Fort Good Hope and Wrigley areas (i.e. two localities along the Mackenzie River), two localities around Hay River, and one locality in the south west corner of the Territory (around Fort Liard) (information inferred from distribution map (fig. 1322) in Griffiths (1991b)). Because this species is likely to be more widespread in the territory (see range extent) a wide range of occurrence was selected (6->300).

Status Rank Description:
A gap in the data is making this species appear vulnerable, when there is no indication that this is the case. Gaps in the taxonomic record do not represent real gaps and likely reflect a lack of collection effort rather than real rarity, particularly because the collection of these flies was opportunistic, rather than intended to establish occurrence or abundance. As well, northern localities are often difficult to access and collecting there is often limited. This species is common and widespread in boreal areas in Canada. Although records in the Northwest Territories are limited (6), this species is present in neighboring regions- Yukon Territory, Nunavut, British Columbia, and Alberta (Griffiths 1991b, 1997). A conservative assessment would put this species at secure to apparently secure in the Northwest Territories, since although there is no indication that this species is under any threat, it is possible.
